Bar Codes: DotCode Debuts for High-Speed Encoding

Bert Moore
Editor

DotCode Enables High-Speed, Machine Readable, Variable Data Coding for Ink Jet

From the very beginning, there's been a trade-off with bar code marking and production line speed. Applying marks or labels sometimes required slowing the line -- something that was not seen as enhancing productivity. Over the years, manufacturers have developed innovative solutions to help eliminate the need for slower line speeds.

One area that has not been so successfully addressed has been high-speed ink jet and laser etch with variable data. Encoding machine readable lot/batch, expiration/best-by date and other production control data on low margin commodity items has never been successfully accomplished. Currently, this data is provided in human readable characters -- sometimes only barely human readable.

DotCode was developed specifically for these applications.
